STRUCK Percussion Ensemble
Struck Percussion is a professional percussion ensemble based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The group formed in the fall of 2011 with the goal of creating fresh and exciting percussion music that engages a wide-range of audiences. Struck has presented dozens of clinics and performances throughout Minnesota while playing standard duet, trio and quartet repertoire, as well as pieces composed specifically for the ensemble. Performing members include Joel Alexander, David Birrow, Bojan Hoover and Adam Rappel.
Since their formation, Struck Percussion has performed in collaboration with MacPhail Center for Music, Ballet Folklorico Mexico Azteca, the Walker Art Center, the University of Minnesota, and the Minnesota Percussion Association. Struck is also committed to creating community awareness of the percussive arts by providing educational workshops in the community and in local school settings. Struck Percussion has presented clinics at the Minnesota Percussion Association Day of Percussion, Winona High School, Rosemount High School, and The Metropolitan Library Service Agency’s “Live at the Library” series.
In the spring of 2012, Struck Percussion was awarded a grant through MacPhail Center for Music for artistic development and commissioned local Minneapolis composer Joshua Clausen to write a new piece for the ensemble. In the words of the composer, the intentions of this new multi-movement work are to "meld the tropes and techniques of minimalism, avant-garde classical and electronic dance music." Struck Percussion performed the world premiere of “I’m sorry, I’ve already forgotten your name” on Friday, February 1st 2013 at MacPhail Center for Music as well as throughout the Midwest in the months following.
In spring of 2013, Struck Percussion was awarded an Artist Grant through MacPhail and commissioned local composer James Holdman to write a new piece for percussion ensemble and silent film. The piece is currently being completed, and Struck will be performing it at many venues beginning in 2014.
